Next, let's talk about the classification of abrasives. It is generally classified according to its hardness. The highest hardness is diamond, which has two kinds of artificial diamond and natural diamond. The next is the carbides, such as black silicon carbide, green silicon carbide, boron carbide and carbon silicon boron; Thirdly, corundum with higher hardness, such as brown corundum, white corundum, single crystal corundum, chrome corundum, microcrystalline corundum, black corundum, zirconium corundum and sintered corundum, etc. The lowest hardness oxides (also known as high quality chemical abrasives), chromium oxide, iron oxide, magnesium oxide and cerium oxide, etc. The above is the general classification method, but there are also natural and artificial abrasives to be classified. However, because natural abrasives have many impurities, uneven abrasive, high price, lack of high-quality abrasive resources and other limitations, so, almost all the use of artificial abrasives.
1 Artificial diamond
Synthetic diamond is a kind of abrasive with high hardness. Its color is a sign of its impurities, which come in a variety of colors, including gray, pale pink, and yellow-white. It has good thermal conductivity and little thermal expansion. Artificial fine steel grinding powder is mainly used for grinding hard alloy workpiece. Its price is relatively expensive, but if a grinding wheel embedded with artificial diamond powder is used to process the two hard alloy measuring surface of the micrometer, it can be used continuously for more than ten years, so it is generally appropriate. The adding method of artificial diamond powder is generally coating. In order to make its abrasive particles evenly and appropriately coated on the surface of the tool, artificial diamond powder with the particle size of W0.5~W14 is often used to prepare grinding paste to complete rough and fine grinding.
2 Boron carbide
Boron carbide is a compound obtained by smelting a mixture of industrial boric acid and low ash carbon feedstock (petroleum coke). The hardness of boron carbide is second only to diamond. After grinding, the abrasive particles almost become the shape of equal volume and sharp edge with edge force, which is similar to diamond in cutting ability. Because it is cheaper than diamond, it is often used as an alternative abrasive for diamond. Boron carbide is mainly used for grinding hard alloy, hardened steel, optical glass and gemstone materials of the workpiece, especially suitable for large margin of coarse grinding work.
3 White corundum
White corundum grinding powder is commonly known as emery, also known as alumina grinding powder, it is the white corundum crystal block obtained by smelting aluminum oxygen powder in the electric furnace, crushed and sorted according to the particle size standard. White corundum and brown corundum belong to corundum abrades, the difference between them is how much alumina crystallization content. Generally speaking, they can be distinguished by their color, such as dark brown alumina about 92%, light brown alumina about 96%, pink alumina about 98%, and white alumina more than 98.5%. White corundum alumina crystallization content is the most, less harmful impurities that is pure color quality, which is beneficial to improve the cutting performance. In addition to white corundum low price, high hardness, especially suitable for processing hardened steel, cast iron, mild steel and non-metallic materials. Therefore, white corundum abrasives are the most widely used in rough grinding, fine grinding and polishing.
4 Silicon carbide
Silicon carbide is divided into black silicon carbide and green silicon carbide two kinds, it is made of silica and carbon in the resistance furnace heating and get. Silicon carbide has good thermal conductivity and low thermal expansion coefficient. Compared with green silicon carbide, black silicon carbide has high hardness and low toughness. In addition, can also be distinguished according to their color, such as silicon carbide content of 96~99% is black; Silicon carbide content of more than 99% is green. Black silicon carbide is mostly used for grinding brass castings, bronze castings, aluminum castings, castings, marble, granite rock, ceramics and glass, green silicon carbide is mostly used for grinding hard alloy, hardened steel and so on.
Chromium oxide, iron oxide, magnesium oxide and cerium oxide
This kind of abrasive has the lowest hardness, soft and fine abrasive particles, and is generally coated on the research tool or elastic felt wheel for the fine grinding or polishing work to improve the surface finish of the workpiece.
Chromium oxide is made by roasting potassium chromate and sulfur. It is mainly used for the final finishing of precision surfaces, especially for the final finishing and polishing of hardened steel parts, such as micrometer calibration posts and Morse taper gauges. In practice, in order to improve the cutting ability of chromium oxide to achieve the best process results, the grinding paste mixed with W1~W2 white corundum powder and an appropriate amount of stearic acid is often used for processing.
Iron oxide is a very fine polishing agent, it is often used to polish hard and brittle workpiece, such as optical flat crystal and optical glass lens fine polishing process using it.
Magnesium oxide and cerium oxide are good polishing agents, mainly used for polishing hard brittle materials, such as glass, monocrystal silicon sheet and so on.
